Description

A few months back I reviewed the EEG study on a pediatric neurology patient with suspected Alice in Wonderland Syndrome (AIWS) - An exceptionally rare syndrome also known as Todd’s Syndrome.

The condition which can arise due to a various number of etiologies presents with a wide array of complex and bizarre symptoms that result in visual distortions, alterations of self perception, hallucinations, depersonalization etc.

Some of the hallmark features have been captured in this piece above:

▪️ Macro/Micro- Somatognosia - a perception of body or body parts seeming distorted and larger or smaller than reality

▪️ Lilliputian Hallucinations - visual distortions where people appear smaller than they actually are

▪️Porropsia - objects appearing smaller and seem to be moving further away

▪️Somatopsychic Duality - described as feeling vertically split down the middle into two separate distinct people

▪️visual hallucinations described as faces molding into dragon like images

There are only a few hundred documented cases of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome and it remains a largely mysterious and poorly understood phenomenon.
